Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Buzzer Beater — the NBA community platform for real fans.

Getting Started

Buzzer Beater is an NBA community platform for basketball fans. It gives you real-time game scores, player stats, injury reports, live chat, and personalised dashboards — all in one place. It's available as a web app at communitynba.com and as an iOS app.

Yes, the core platform is completely free. You can browse teams, players, scores, and injury reports without an account. Creating a free account unlocks personalised features like favourites, push notifications, and your own dashboard.

Sign up is passwordless — just enter your email address and we'll send you a 6-digit verification code. Once confirmed, pick a display name and your favourite team(s) and you're in. No password to remember.

Yes! The Buzzer Beater iOS app is available on the App Store. It includes everything on the web platform plus push notifications for injury updates, game starts, and scores. An Android version is on the roadmap.

Notifications

When a player on one of your favourite teams or players list gets a status update (e.g. Questionable → Out), you'll get a push notification. We batch team updates together so you get one clean summary per team rather than a flood of individual alerts.

Injury data is refreshed every minute from multiple sources. The official NBA official injury report is parsed every minute, and additional detail from other sources and social media. Data older than 48 hours is automatically cleaned up.

Yes. In your notification settings you can toggle alerts for injuries, news updates, pre-game lineups, game starts, and quarter-end summaries independently. You can also mute specific teams or players you're not interested in.

If a key player on your favourite team gets a status change within 3 hours of tip-off, we send an urgent pre-game alert marked 🚨 URGENT. These are intentionally more prominent because late injury news can significantly affect a match.

Stats & Data

We aggregate data from several sources. The NBA's official CDN (cdn.nba.com) is the highest-priority source for game data and player stats. Injury detail comes from the official NBA Injury report and other sources. We always prefer the most authoritative source when there's a conflict.

During live games, scores update every second via connection to our servers — no need to refresh the page. The connection automatically recovers if it drops and will fall back to polling if needed.

Yes. On a player's profile page, a live stats banner appears automatically while they're in a game showing real-time points, rebounds, assists, and shooting splits.

Injury statuses reflect the latest available data from the NBA's Official report and other sources. We use deduplication logic to avoid sending conflicting updates from different sources, always deferring to the highest-priority source.

Account & Favourites

On any team or player page, tap the star icon in the banner area. You'll receive personalised notifications and the team or player will appear in your dashboard. You can manage your full favourites list in your account settings.

Absolutely. You can favourite any combination of teams and individual players regardless of which team they're on. Notifications for individual player follows are sent separately from team-based summaries.

Your account is tied to your email address. Just log in with the same email on your new device and all your favourites, preferences, and settings will be there. On iOS, re-enabling push notifications will register the new device automatically.

Yes. You can request account deletion from within your account settings. This removes all your personal data, favourites, and notification preferences from our systems.

Privacy & Security

We collect your email address, display name, favourite teams/players, notification preferences, and device token for push notifications. We use Google Analytics to understand how the platform is used in aggregate. We do not sell your personal data.

Yes. We use AWS SES for transactional emails (verification codes only) and never share your address with third parties. We don't send marketing emails — the only emails you'll get from us are login verification codes.

No. Buzzer Beater only collects data within the app itself to improve your experience on the platform. We do not use cross-app or cross-site tracking.

Platform & Availability

Buzzer Beater is currently available in English and Spanish in the iOS App and only English on the website. We are currently working on bringing Spanish to the website as well. You can set your preferred language during sign-up or change it later in your account settings. Notifications are sent in your preferred language.

The web app works on all modern browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. The site is fully responsive and works well on mobile browsers too, though the iOS app offers a richer experience with push notifications.

Not yet, but it's on our roadmap. In the meantime, the web app at communitynba.com works great on Android browsers and has most of the same features.
